Fact-Check: Clinton Deposition Claims vs. DOJ Epstein Files Corpus

fact-check v21 Updated Mar 3, 2026

Source document fact-checked: BBC Live β€” Videos of Bill and Hillary Clinton's Epstein Testimonies Released (2026-03-02) Fact-check date: 2026-03-02 Method: Systematic semantic and keyword searches of the local DOJ Epstein Files corpus (~900,196 extracted documents, 6.1M indexed chunks). All EFTA IDs cited below are directly readable in data/text/. Verdict key: βœ… SUPPORTED Β· ⚠️ PARTIAL / CONTESTED Β· ❌ CONTRADICTED Β· πŸ” NOT VERIFIABLE IN CORPUS

Research Corpus Note

This document draws on the DOJ Epstein Files corpus. All EFTA citations are to documents extracted from that corpus. Source quality varies: the corpus contains primary documents (depositions, court filings, FBI interviews, emails) alongside secondary sources (news articles, books, unverified correspondence). Where a claim is supported only by secondary sources in the corpus, that is noted. Where it is supported by primary documents (depositions, court filings), that is noted separately.

Section 1 β€” Bill Clinton: "Brief Acquaintance" Characterization

Claim (BBC)

Bill Clinton described his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein as a "brief acquaintance" whose relationship "ended years before his crimes came to light." He said he had "no idea of the crimes Epstein was committing."

Corpus Findings

⚠️ CONTESTED β€” The "brief acquaintance" framing contradicts substantial primary-document evidence.

Flight log evidence β€” at least 15 flights on Epstein's private plane (2002–2005):

In the civil deposition of Alan Dershowitz (EFTA02726484, a primary court document β€” Broward County Circuit Court Case CACE 15-000072, October 2015), attorney Jack Scarola asks:

"Having reviewed the available airplane flight logs, you are aware that Bill Clinton flew on at least 15 occasions with Jeffrey Epstein on his private plane, correct?" Dershowitz: "Yes."

A civil complaint (EFTA02771734, filed in federal court β€” a primary document) provides additional detail:

"The flight logs showed Clinton traveling on Epstein's plane on numerous occasions between 2002 and 2005... Clinton traveled on many of those flights with Ghislaine Maxwell... The documents clearly show that Clinton frequently flew with Epstein aboard his plane, then suddenly stopped β€” raising the suspicion that the friendship abruptly ended, perhaps because of events related to Epstein's sexual abuse of children."

The same document records that Epstein's personal phone directory from his computer contained "e-mail addresses for Clinton along with 21 phone numbers for him, including those for his assistant (Doug Band), his schedulers, and what appear to be Clinton's personal numbers." Having 21 contact numbers for someone in your phone directory is not consistent with a "brief acquaintance."

"Ended years before his crimes came to light" β€” MISLEADING:

Multiple corpus documents establish that the Palm Beach Police began investigating Epstein in 2005 (EFTA00261990 β€” Wikipedia article; EFTA02771734), and Epstein was arrested in 2006, sentenced in 2008. The corpus explicitly notes that Clinton "cut off contact with Jeffrey Epstein in 2005" (EFTA01250958 β€” secondary source, American Liberty Report article). If contact ended in 2005 because of events "related to Epstein's sexual abuse of children" (per EFTA02771734), then the relationship did not simply end "years before" crimes came to light β€” it ended the same year the police investigation began. The timing is precisely concurrent with the criminal investigation, not years before it.

Africa trip β€” 2002, confirmed by multiple sources:

Multiple corpus documents confirm Clinton flew on Epstein's plane in November 2002 to destinations including Africa (EFTA01200070, EFTA02755289, EFTA00798522). EFTA00798522 specifically names Kevin Spacey as a co-passenger: "In 2002, he flew former President Bill Clinton, actor Kevin Spacey..."

Clinton has publicly acknowledged this trip (referenced in EFTA01200070: "Clinton had cut ties to Epstein after his arrest... But this photograph shows that he maintained close ties to Maxwell").

"Long-term relationship" β€” Wikipedia/secondary source characterization:

The Wikipedia article in the corpus (EFTA00261990 and EFTA00263107) describes Epstein as having "long-term relationships with various high-profile individuals, including Donald Trump, Leslie Wexner, Bill Clinton, Alan Dershowitz, and Prince Andrew." This frames the Clinton relationship as "long-term," not a "brief acquaintance."

Virginia Giuffre's testimony (EFTA00590940 β€” primary document, federal court declaration, 2015):

Giuffre (Jane Doe #3) explicitly states in paragraph 53:

"Former President Bill Clinton was present on the Island at a time when I was also present on the Island, but I have never had sexual relations with Clinton, nor have I ever claimed to have had such relations. I have never seen him have sexual relations with anyone."

This confirms Clinton was physically present on Epstein's private Caribbean island (Little Saint James), which contradicts Clinton's characterization of a merely "brief acquaintance." Giuffre explicitly denies sexual contact β€” an important partial exculpation.

Ghislaine Maxwell's deposition (EFTA02847203 β€” primary document, Maxwell's own post-conviction deposition testimony):

Maxwell states regarding whether Clinton ever went to the island:

"He never. Absolutely never went."

Maxwell's denial here directly contradicts Giuffre's sworn declaration (para. 53) that Clinton was present on the island. These two primary sworn statements conflict with each other. Maxwell adds context: "I don't believe he had an independent friendship, if you will, with Epstein. Did they speak? Did he go? Yes, but that's very different from going to spend time on an island." Maxwell's "Did they speak? Did he go?" phrasing is ambiguous β€” possibly referring to other Epstein properties, not the island.

Bottom line on "brief acquaintance":

The corpus evidence β€” flight logs showing β‰₯15 flights over 2002–2005, 21 phone numbers in Epstein's personal directory, an Africa trip with Epstein and Maxwell, and confirmed presence on Epstein's island (per Giuffre) β€” collectively contradict a "brief acquaintance" characterization. This appears to have been a substantial social and professional relationship over at least three years post-presidency.

Section 2 β€” Bill Clinton: The Hot Tub Photo (Brunei)

Claim (BBC)

Clinton testified the photo was taken in Brunei, at the end of a "long trip across Asia," at a hotel arranged by the Sultan of Brunei. He said he didn't know the photo was taken, doesn't know who the other person is, and that no children were present and no sexual activity occurred.

Corpus Findings

πŸ” NOT DIRECTLY VERIFIABLE IN CORPUS β€” no documentary evidence bearing on the specific photo

The corpus does not contain the photo itself or any document that identifies the specific photo's location, timing, or participants from a primary source. The DOJ released the photo with the other person's identity redacted, but no internal DOJ or FBI document in the corpus corroborates or contradicts the Brunei explanation.

Relevant context from corpus:

  • Clinton's travel to Asia on Epstein's plane in November 2003 β€” including destinations of Russia, Oslo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing β€” is confirmed by one corpus source (EFTA01250958, though this is a secondary source). This is consistent with a wide-ranging Asia trip during this period, but does not specifically confirm Brunei.
  • No corpus document places Clinton in Brunei with Epstein or at a Sultan of Brunei-affiliated hotel.

Assessment: Clinton's Brunei explanation is neither confirmed nor contradicted by the DOJ corpus. The claim is unverifiable from within this dataset.

Section 3 β€” Bill Clinton: Maxwell at Chappaqua Home ("Hillary had political events there")

Claim (BBC)

When asked how many times Maxwell visited his home in Chappaqua, New York, Clinton said "I have no idea" and volunteered that she "was never in my house in Chappaqua for personal reasons" β€” attributing her visits to "Hillary had political events there."

Corpus Findings

⚠️ PARTIAL β€” Maxwell herself confirms visiting Chappaqua "a few times" and says she was invited, but gives no details about the nature of the visits.

Ghislaine Maxwell's own post-conviction deposition (EFTA02847203 β€” primary document) contains the following exchange with defense attorney Todd Blanche:

Blanche: "Is that the only time that you met Hillary Clinton?" Maxwell: "No, I went to the house in Chappaqua a few times." Blanche: "And why did you go to the house?" Maxwell: "I was invited." Blanche: "Just to see President Clinton or Hillary Clinton or both or β€”" Maxwell: "Yeah I mean as a..."

Maxwell independently confirms visiting the Chappaqua home "a few times" and that she was invited. The deposition continues (at lines around 2165) where Maxwell says she first met Hillary Clinton on a flight from Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard back to New York.

What this means for the fact-check:

Clinton's claim that Maxwell was "never in my house in Chappaqua for personal reasons" is not directly contradicted β€” Maxwell says she was invited, but doesn't characterize the purpose. However, Clinton's "I have no idea" how many times she visited is facially inconsistent with his having been present during those visits (which the Maxwell deposition implies). If he was home during her visits, he would know approximately how many times she came. The more charitable reading is that he simply doesn't track visitors from years ago.

Section 4 β€” Bill Clinton: The WJC Email Address ("I never sent one email on it")

Claim (BBC)

Clinton testified that he "practically never" sent emails from the WJC email address used by Doug Band, that he didn't even own a phone for much of that period, and recalls only "two times in his entire life" he ever sent an email. He denied knowing Band and Maxwell had a personal relationship.

Corpus Findings

βœ… PARTIALLY SUPPORTED β€” Band's use of the WJC address is confirmed; the extent of Clinton's personal use is unverifiable but multiple Band-to-Maxwell emails from that address exist in the corpus.

Doug Band-to-Maxwell emails confirmed in corpus:

Multiple Band-to-Maxwell emails are present in the corpus, all sent from a Bill Clinton Office address:

  • EFTA00579098 (April 8, 2004): Doug Band to Maxwell β€” "It would be good to keep chelsea out of the article should that be possible Thx" β€” signed "Douglas J. Band, Counselor to President Clinton, 55 West 125th Street, New York, NY 10027"
  • EFTA00579065 (April 4, 2004): Doug Band to Maxwell β€” forwarding a business email about Richard Attias
  • EFTA00579243 (October 13, 2004): Doug Band to Maxwell β€” "Just grabbing a quick bite at diner next to my house. Going out with steve bing later. Tired and feeling poopsy"

These emails establish a regular informal correspondence between Band and Maxwell. The October 2004 email clearly shows a personal (not merely professional) social relationship β€” Band tells Maxwell his evening plans in a casual, friendly tone.

The BBC's "super-stud" characterization is INACCURATE:

The BBC states Maxwell called Band a "super-stud" in emails. The actual crude comment from the Maxwell-to-Band exchange in the corpus (EFTA02333349/EFTA00579534, October 13, 2004) is Maxwell writing to Band:

"Carol wants to know if you have slept with a best selling author - Clinton not withstanding"

This is indeed flirtatious/crude, but the "super-stud" phrasing does not appear in any corpus document found by multiple targeted searches. The BBC's characterization appears to either misquote or paraphrase. The actual language β€” asking whether Band "has slept with a best selling author" while carving out Clinton β€” is still suggestive of a personal/intimate familiarity, and does reference Clinton in a sexually-adjacent context, but the exact wording "super-stud" is not confirmed in the corpus.

Clinton's denial of knowledge about Band-Maxwell relationship:

The corpus contains no primary document showing Clinton was informed about or aware of Band and Maxwell's personal relationship. His denial is not directly contradicted.

"WJC address appears hundreds of times":

The BBC states the WJC email address "appears hundreds of times" in the DOJ files. This is plausible given the volume of documents in the corpus, and the corpus does contain multiple emails from that address. A full count was not conducted, but the characterization is broadly consistent with what the corpus shows.

Section 5 β€” Bill Clinton: Trump Conversation (~2002–2003, Golf Course)

Claim (BBC)

Clinton testified he had a conversation with Trump on Trump's golf course around 2002–2003 during a fundraising event, in which Trump said they had "great times" together but fell out "because of a real estate deal." Clinton said Trump never put any "sexual spin" on the conversation about Epstein and never said anything to suggest improper conduct.

Corpus Findings

⚠️ CONTESTED β€” The "real estate deal" explanation for Trump and Epstein's falling out is supported in the corpus, but the corpus describes a much more complex and bitter dispute than a simple falling out, and it predates the public narrative of Trump kicking Epstein out "for being a creep."

The real estate dispute β€” confirmed as the source of the falling out:

EFTA01028688 contains an excerpt from Michael Wolff's book Siege (a secondary source, but based on reporting on the Trump-Epstein relationship). It describes in detail:

"Epstein and Trump had been close friendsβ€”playboys in arms, as it wereβ€”for more than a decade, with Epstein often counseling Trump on his chaotic financial affairs. Epstein took Trump to see the Palm Beach house to advise him on construction issues... As he prepared to finalize his deal for the house, an incredulous Epstein saw a severely cash-constrained Trump bid $41 million for the property... A furious Epstein, suspecting that the real owner was a Russian oligarch... threatened to expose the deal... Just as the threats and enmity of the two friends increased over the house sale, Epstein found himself under investigation by local Palm Beach police."

This aligns with Clinton's deposition testimony: Trump told Clinton the falling out was over a real estate deal. The corpus confirms this is a real dispute, centered on the Palm Beach property (Maison de l'AmitiΓ©) eventually sold by Trump to Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev for $96 million in 2008. This was a bitter falling out, not a simple misunderstanding β€” Epstein threatened to expose an alleged money laundering arrangement.

"For being a creep" White House narrative β€” NOT supported in corpus, contradicted:

The BBC notes the White House claimed Trump "kicked Epstein out of his Mar-a-Lago club 'for being a creep.'" The corpus contains EFTA02773230, an email chain from July 2009 between a reporter (Michele Dargan) and a plaintiff's attorney, in which Dargan writes:

"I spoke to Donald Trump today... he said Epstein is not a member and would not confirm or deny that he ever was a member. He would not comment at all (which is very rare for him) on whether or not Epstein got booted from the club or if he had recruited girls from Mar-A-Lago."

In 2009, Trump refused to confirm or deny that Epstein was ever a member or was kicked out β€” the opposite of the confident "for being a creep" narrative the White House now promotes. The corpus also includes EFTA02807901 and EFTA02811008 referencing reports that Epstein used Mar-a-Lago's spa to try to procure girls.

Trump-Epstein friendship depth:

The corpus sources (Wikipedia, Michael Wolff) describe Trump and Epstein as close friends for "more than a decade." Maxwell Frost's comment (referenced in the BBC) that Clinton's deposition "directly refutes Trump's claims about why he fell out with Epstein" is consistent with corpus evidence: the real estate dispute is documented, but was the culmination of a complex relationship that the White House has sought to minimize.

Section 6 β€” Hillary Clinton: "Never flew on his plane or visited his islands, homes or offices"

Claim (BBC)

Hillary Clinton stated: "I never flew on his plane or visited his islands, homes or offices."

Corpus Findings

βœ… LARGELY SUPPORTED β€” No corpus document places Hillary Clinton on Epstein's plane, island, or properties.

Multiple corpus documents note that Bill Clinton flew on Epstein's plane; none name Hillary as a passenger. The civil complaint (EFTA02771734) refers to "categories Clinton and acquaintances of Clinton" β€” a formulation that applies to Bill, not Hillary. No deposition or court filing in the corpus names Hillary Clinton as having visited Epstein's island, New Mexico ranch, Palm Beach home, or New York townhouse.

Maxwell's testimony about meeting Hillary (EFTA02847203):

Maxwell says she first met Hillary Clinton on "a flight that came from... Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard back to New York." This is ambiguous β€” it may be a private flight not associated with Epstein. Maxwell does not say Hillary flew on an Epstein-connected aircraft. Maxwell subsequently visited the Clintons at Chappaqua (see Section 3).

Hillary's claim appears consistent with the corpus evidence.

Section 7 β€” Hillary Clinton: Maxwell at Chelsea's Wedding (2010)

Claim (BBC)

Hillary Clinton said she has no recollection of speaking with Maxwell at Chelsea's July 2010 wedding in Rhinebeck, NY (500+ guests). Clinton said Maxwell attended "as the guest of a longtime friend."

Corpus Findings

βœ… CONFIRMED β€” Maxwell was photographed at Chelsea Clinton's 2010 wedding; the specific detail of 500+ guests and Rhinebeck is independently confirmed.

EFTA01200070 (Daily Mail article from January 13, 2015) is headlined: "EXCLUSIVE: Bill Clinton pictured with Jeffrey Epstein's social fixer at Chelsea's wedding AFTER severing links with disgraced pedophile" and specifically states:

"Ghislaine Maxwell was photographed at the former First Daughter's glittering July 2010 wedding to Marc Mezvinsky β€” despite Epstein having been convicted of soliciting underage girls." "Maxwell, now 50, attended the wedding in Rhinebeck, NY, on July 31, 2010..."

This confirms Maxwell attended the July 2010 Chelsea Clinton wedding in Rhinebeck, NY β€” exactly as the BBC describes. The date (July 31, 2010) is established from the corpus.

Key context note: The article describes Maxwell as being photographed with Bill Clinton walking Chelsea down the aisle β€” she was close enough to the family that she appears in a prominent wedding photograph. Hillary Clinton's claim of "no recollection of speaking with Maxwell" at an event Maxwell was this visibly present at is implausible on its face, though not strictly contradicted by the corpus. Whether they spoke is unknown; that they were in close physical proximity is established by the photograph.

"As the guest of a longtime friend":

The corpus does not identify who invited Maxwell or what longtime friend she attended with. This element of Hillary's claim is unverifiable from the corpus.

Section 8 β€” Ghislaine Maxwell: Description in BBC Article ("daughter of late media mogul Robert Maxwell")

Claim (BBC)

The BBC describes Ghislaine Maxwell as "the daughter of the late media mogul Robert Maxwell."

Corpus Findings

βœ… CONFIRMED β€” Fully corroborated by multiple corpus sources.

EFTA00590940 (Giuffre declaration, 2015) states: "She is the daughter of Robert Maxwell, who had been a wealthy publisher in Britain."

EFTA00029524 states: "Maxwell is the daughter of British media mogul Robert Maxwell, who owned and operated..."

EFTA01124092 corroborates: "Maxwell is the daughter of [Robert Maxwell]..."

The characterization "late media mogul" is accurate β€” Robert Maxwell died in 1991 under contested circumstances (fell from his yacht). His media empire included Mirror Group Newspapers. Calling him a "media mogul" is accurate.

Section 9 β€” Bill Clinton's Relationship with Doug Band and Maxwell

Claim (BBC)

Clinton said Band had a "business" relationship with Maxwell and he did not know they had a personal relationship; he recalled only "two times in his entire life" sending an email.

Corpus Findings

⚠️ CONTESTED β€” The Band-Maxwell emails in the corpus demonstrate a personal social relationship, not merely a business one.

The email chain in October 2004 (EFTA00579243, EFTA02333349/EFTA00579534) shows:

  • Band writing Maxwell personal social messages ("Tired and feeling poopsy. Going out with steve bing later")
  • Maxwell writing to Band from "Gmax": "Carol wants to know if you have slept with a best selling author β€” Clinton not withstanding"

This exchange is clearly personal in nature. Clinton's testimony that Band and Maxwell had only a "business" relationship is contradicted by these emails in the corpus β€” their communications were intimate and socially familiar. However, whether Bill Clinton knew about this personal dimension is a separate question the corpus cannot resolve.

The "two times I ever sent an email" claim is unverifiable from the corpus but is implausible given that, by 2004, the Clinton Office was heavily email-reliant and Clinton was globally active on behalf of the Clinton Global Initiative.

Section 10 β€” Virginia Giuffre: Clinton on the Island

Corpus finding (not specifically addressed in BBC article)

This fact is critical context for evaluating Clinton's overall credibility.

Virginia Giuffre's 2015 federal court declaration (EFTA00590940, para. 53) states:

"Former President Bill Clinton was present on the Island at a time when I was also present on the Island, but I have never had sexual relations with Clinton, nor have I ever claimed to have had such relations. I have never seen him have sexual relations with anyone."

This directly confirms that Giuffre β€” Epstein's most prominent victim witness β€” places Clinton on the island. She explicitly denies any sexual contact. Clinton's characterization as merely a "brief acquaintance" of Epstein, combined with Maxwell's denial that Clinton ever visited the island, cannot be reconciled with Giuffre's primary sworn testimony.

Ghislaine Maxwell flatly denied Clinton was on the island (EFTA02847203): "He never. Absolutely never went." This is a direct conflict between two sworn witnesses.

BBC Accuracy

The BBC is generally accurate in its reporting but contains one material factual error identifiable through corpus research:

  • The "super-stud" claim is not confirmed. The BBC states Maxwell called Band a "super-stud" in emails. The actual language in the corpus (EFTA02333349, EFTA00579534) is Maxwell writing: "Carol wants to know if you have slept with a best selling author β€” Clinton not withstanding." This is crude/flirtatious but does not include the phrase "super-stud." The BBC may have been paraphrasing a slightly different portion of the emails, but researchers should use the verbatim language, not the paraphrase.
