The $30 Million Program: Jeffrey Epstein, Harvard, and the Science of Evolution
[Research] β Primary sources: DOJ/SDNY EFTA corpus
Overview
In 2003, Jeffrey Epstein gave $30 million to Harvard University to create a new institute dedicated to studying the mathematics of evolution, genetics, and the origin of life. The Program for Evolutionary Dynamics β known as PED β was established with his money, under his direction, led by a mathematician he had been cultivating for three years, and brought into being with the personal cooperation of Harvard's president, Lawrence Summers.
By the time Epstein was arrested in 2019, PED had produced more than 250 research papers. Eighteen appeared in Nature or Science, including several front-cover studies. It was a legitimate, celebrated academic institution.
It was also something else: a program whose founding donor was simultaneously trafficking minor girls with a stated goal of seeding the human gene pool with his own genetics; a program whose director facilitated the routing of a billionaire's $5 million donation through Epstein's personal financial intermediary eleven years after the founding grant; and a program staffed by scientists who β according to a victim's handwritten journal β were guests at Epstein's private island during the period of the abuse.
This post traces the full evidentiary arc, from the founding of PED to the December 2014 financial email that shows Nowak coordinating Leon Black's pledge through Epstein's network. All documents cited are from the publicly available DOJ/SDNY EFTA corpus.
Part I: The Origin β March 2000 to August 2003
A Conference on Language Evolution (EFTA01964817)
The document that tells the founding story of PED most completely is EFTA01964817, titled "A Financier Called Jeffrey Epstein Accelerates the Course of Evolution at Harvard." It begins not in 2003 but in 2000.
"It all began in March of 2000 when Epstein, a New York fund manager with a passion for cutting-edge science, invited Nowak to organize a conference on the evolution of language. Nowak was then head of the Program in Theoretical Biology at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and had already published a substantial amount of work on the mathematics of the HIV virus, infectious bacteria, and cancer cells."
Martin Nowak was not an obscure figure. He was one of the world's leading mathematical biologists β a researcher who had developed quantitative models of how HIV progresses through the human immune system, how cancer cells evolve resistance to treatment, and how cooperative behavior emerges in competitive populations. His tool was not a laboratory or a sequencer. It was mathematics applied to biological systems.
Epstein identified Nowak at Princeton in 2000 and brought him to organize a conference. Over the next three years, he built a relationship. When he was ready to act, he did so at scale.
Lawrence Summers and the Founding Grant (EFTA01964817, EFTA02032823)
EFTA01964817 records the formal establishment of PED precisely:
"...established in August 2003, with the cooperation of Lawrence Summers, then president of Harvard."
Lawrence Summers β who went on to become Treasury Secretary, Director of the National Economic Council, and a candidate for Federal Reserve Chair β personally cooperated in the creation of a program funded by a man who had already been investigated for the sexual exploitation of minors. Epstein's first conviction would not come until 2008, but his conduct was known to Florida prosecutors by 2005, and the pattern of his relationships with young women was documented earlier than that.
The grant amount is confirmed in EFTA02032823, a document from the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation describing its science philanthropy:
"One of the main projects the Foundation has supported is the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics at Harvard University. Epstein started funding the Program with a $30 million grant in 2003. Dr. Martin Nowak [is] Director of PED."
Thirty million dollars. That figure appears in multiple documents across the corpus, including EFTA00128820, an asset and background summary that lists the PED grant as a primary philanthropic commitment.
One variant figure appears in EFTA02631305, a 2017 HuffPost article that Epstein forwarded to his network. It describes the grant as $35 million β a slight discrepancy that may reflect additional contributions over time, or simply a reporting imprecision. The Foundation's own document (EFTA02032823) states $30 million as the founding amount.
Part II: What PED Was Built to Study
The Scope of the Research Program (EFTA01964817, EFTA00731343)
PED's stated research program, as described in the founding narrative of EFTA01964817, encompassed:
- The mathematical mechanics of evolution β how populations change over time through the interplay of mutation, selection, and chance
- RNA replication and the origin of life β the mathematics of how self-replicating molecules could have emerged from chemical precursors
- Cancer cell kinetics β PED became one of the first programs to develop a mathematical model of how cancer cells evolve within a host, generating resistance to drugs and evading immune response
- HIV disease progression β Nowak had already published quantitative models of HIV's evolution within individual patients; PED continued this work
- The evolution of cooperation β game-theoretic modeling of when and why organisms cooperate rather than compete, and what that means for social evolution
- The evolution of language β linguistic complexity as a product of evolutionary selection
EFTA00731343 documents the academic output of PED's first seven years:
"In 7 years the members of PED have produced more than 250 research papers, with 18 of those in Nature and Science (including several front covers)."
This is not a vanity institute. It produced peer-reviewed science at the highest level, published in the two most prestigious scientific journals in the world. Eighteen front-tier papers in seven years is a significant research record by any measure.
The Scientist Network (EFTA01112208, EFTA02631305)
EFTA01112208 is a document that profiles the network of scientists Epstein supported, of which Nowak and PED were the centerpiece. The list of named individuals includes:
- Stephen Hawking
- Marvin Minsky β AI pioneer, MIT; named in a victim's handwritten journal as "Martin Minsky," one of the scientists present at Epstein's island
- Lawrence Krauss β physicist; named in the same victim's journal as "Mr. Sauerkraut Krauss"
- George Church β Harvard synthetic biologist; pioneer of the Personal Genome Project; on the "Homo Sapiens 2.0" blue-eyes list
- Eric Lander β Broad Institute; co-architect of the Human Genome Project
- Gregory Benford, Lee Smolin, Seth Lloyd, Murray Gell-Mann, Gerald Edelman, Kip Thorne
EFTA02631305 β the 2017 HuffPost article forwarded by Epstein β names Hawking, Minsky, Krauss, and Nowak together and notes that Epstein was "one of the largest donors to individual scientists around the world, granting up to $200 million a year."
That figure β $200 million a year to individual scientists β is difficult to reconcile with Epstein's disclosed income and assets. It may be promotional exaggeration from Foundation documents designed to impress. But even as an approximation, it describes a deliberate, sustained, and expensive effort to position Epstein at the center of elite scientific life.
The scientists on this list were not random. Cross-referencing with the Blue Eyes corpus documents (EFTA01192599, EFTA00583600, EFTA00583606 β the "92nd Street Y potential list"), nearly every name appears on the curated list of blue-eyed elite intellectuals that Epstein maintained in connection with the "Homo Sapiens 2.0" event. Church, Lander, Gell-Mann, Nowak, Minsky β all appear in both contexts.
The same scientists Epstein funded. The same scientists he annotated by eye color. The same scientists brought to the island.
Part III: The Leon Black Connection β A $5 Million Pledge in December 2014
The Pledge Document (EFTA01194545)
EFTA01194545 is a letter dated December 2014. It is signed by Leon D. Black and addressed to Martin Nowak at Harvard.
The subject line:
"$5,000,000 Irrevocable Pledge for the Use and Benefit of the Program For Evolutionary Dynamics, Harvard Fund Number 347150"
Leon Black β the co-founder and, at the time, CEO of Apollo Global Management, one of the world's largest private equity firms β committed $5 million to Nowak's program. The pledge letter specifies wire transfer instructions to Bank of America, with funds designated "For Sole Use and Benefit of the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics."
The Harvard fund number β 347150 β is specified exactly.
The Routing Email (EFTA00639492)
If EFTA01194545 establishes the pledge, EFTA00639492 establishes who was in the middle.
This is an email chain dated December 15, 2014 β the same month as the Black pledge. It is from Richard Kahn of HBRK Associates Inc. β Epstein's financial intermediary β to jeevacation@gmail.com, Jeffrey Epstein's personal email address. Forwarded within the chain is an email from Martin Nowak himself to Kahn.
Nowak's message to Kahn:
"dear richard / below please find the template for the donation by Mr Black. / the wording in the letter is quite important. especially also the fund number. / may i call you to discuss on the phone? / best wishes / martin"
Kahn's message to Epstein:
"i have received attached from martin nowak / should i prepare in any special format as i send over to Eileen and Rich for Leon / is it ok to send each charity as i receive narratives and advise Eileen and Rich to begin making contributions / please advise"
This email establishes the following with documentary certainty:
- Martin Nowak drafted the donation template for Leon Black's $5 million pledge to his own program.
- Nowak sent that template to Richard Kahn β Epstein's personal financial intermediary at HBRK Associates.
- Kahn forwarded it to Epstein at his personal email address, seeking instructions on how to pass it to "Eileen and Rich" β the names used in Epstein's network for managing charitable contributions from his clients.
- Nowak specifically flagged that "the wording in the letter is quite important. especially also the fund number" β indicating he had personally designed the pledge letter's language and wanted it passed through accurately.
Epstein was not merely PED's founding donor. Eleven years after writing the initial $30 million check, he was still the intermediary through whom the program's ongoing major gifts were being routed and managed.
Who Is Leon Black?
Leon Black is not an incidental figure in the Epstein story. The relationship between Black and Epstein has been documented extensively β Black paid Epstein more than $158 million over the course of their relationship, nominally for tax, estate, and financial planning advice. Black was forced to resign as Apollo's CEO in 2021 following the public disclosure of those payments.
The $5 million pledge to PED in December 2014 β routed through Epstein's intermediary, with the donation template drafted by Nowak and passed through Epstein's personal email β adds a specific, documented dimension to that relationship. Epstein was directing not just Black's financial planning but his charitable giving. The philanthropic and the financial were channeled through the same intermediary structure.
Part IV: The Institutional Cover β Lawrence Summers, Harvard, and the Epstein Network
Summers and the Foundation Grant (EFTA01964817)
The PED funding arrangement was not covert. Harvard accepted $30 million from Epstein in 2003 with the personal involvement of its president. Lawrence Summers did not merely permit the gift β EFTA01964817 records that PED was established "with the cooperation of Lawrence Summers."
Cooperation is a specific word. It suggests active facilitation, not passive receipt of a donation.
Summers resigned from Harvard's board in 2022 following public disclosure of his prior connections to Epstein. That disclosure β that the president of Harvard had personally cooperated in creating an Epstein-funded program β received far less attention than it warranted.
The Dubin Connection (EFTA01108055)
EFTA01108055 is a Foundation overview document listing the organizations and programs the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation supported. PED is listed prominently. Also listed: the Dubin Breast Center.
Glenn Dubin and his wife Eva Dubin (nΓ©e Andersson) are among the most prominent figures in the civil litigation arising from Epstein's conduct. Eva Dubin is a named party in multiple victim accounts. Glenn Dubin was the co-founder of Highbridge Capital Management. The Dubin Breast Center β listed as a Foundation grantee in the same document that describes PED β connects the Dubin family to Epstein's science philanthropy network directly.
This does not establish that the Dubins knew of the routing arrangements or were involved in the PED funding specifically. It does place them in the same Foundation documents as PED, under the same philanthropic umbrella.
Part V: The Victim Connection
The Journal Entry
A handwritten victim journal preserved in the EFTA corpus lists scientists the victim encountered or was told about in connection with Epstein. Three names appear: "Mr. Novak" (Martin Nowak), "Mr. Sauerkraut Krauss" (Lawrence Krauss), and "Martin Minsky" (Marvin Minsky).
All three are confirmed in the DOJ corpus as recipients of Epstein Foundation support. All three appear in the scientist network documents (EFTA01112208, EFTA02631305). Krauss and Minsky appear on the 92nd Street Y blue-eyes list. Nowak appears on the blue-eyes list and ran the program Epstein funded with $30 million.
The victim's journal does not specify the nature of the scientists' presence or conduct. The document is not presented here as evidence of criminal culpability on the part of any named scientist. It is presented as evidence of the intersection between Epstein's academic network and the environment in which the documented abuse occurred.
The Network in Context
The same scientists Epstein paid appear in the same places Epstein operated. The same institutions Epstein funded were administered through the same network Epstein used to route other billionaires' money. The victim's journal places those scientists in proximity to the abuse.
The files do not prove what any individual scientist knew or did. They document a network with a center of gravity: one man, one foundation, one set of financial intermediaries, and a consistent roster of elite scientists whose work touched on genetics, evolution, and the mathematical modeling of life.
Part VI: What the Documents Do Not Prove
Precision matters. This post documents what the EFTA corpus establishes. It does not establish what has not been confirmed.
The files do not prove that PED was created for purposes other than legitimate academic research. The program produced real science, published in the world's top journals. No document in the corpus describes PED as anything other than a research institute.
The files do not prove that Martin Nowak knew the full scope of Epstein's conduct. The Leon Black routing email establishes that Nowak communicated with Epstein's financial intermediary about a donation. It does not establish what Nowak knew about Epstein's relationship to that intermediary, or about Epstein's conduct toward victims.
The files do not prove that Lawrence Summers knew the full scope of Epstein's conduct when he cooperated in PED's founding in 2003. Epstein's Florida prosecution was not initiated until 2005. Summers's role in 2003 predates that.
The files do not prove that Leon Black's $5 million pledge was improper or illegal. Black pledged money to a legitimate academic program. The routing of that pledge through Epstein's network is documented; its legality is a separate question.
What the files do establish:
- Epstein created and funded PED with $30 million in 2003, with Harvard's institutional cooperation
- He remained an active intermediary in PED's major funding through at least December 2014
- The scientists he funded and the scientists who appear in the victim's journal substantially overlap
- The same financial architecture he used for his own wealth management was used to route charitable giving to the program he founded

Closing
In August 2003, Jeffrey Epstein wrote a $30 million check to Harvard University. The university's president personally cooperated in using that money to create the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics under Martin Nowak β a mathematician who studied how evolution works at the molecular level: RNA, cancer, HIV, cooperation, language.
In December 2014, when PED needed another major gift, Nowak drafted the donation template and sent it to Jeffrey Epstein's personal financial intermediary. Epstein's intermediary forwarded it to Epstein's personal email, asking how to pass it to the people managing Leon Black's charitable contributions. Black pledged $5 million. The fund number Nowak flagged as "quite important" was wired accordingly.
The men in the victim's journal β Nowak, Krauss, Minsky β are the same men on the eugenics list, the same men in the Foundation documents, the same men in the email chains. They are not separate stories about separate scientists. They are the same network, documented across hundreds of files, with one man at the center.
What Epstein intended PED to ultimately become is not proven by these documents. What the documents prove is what he built, what he paid for, how he funded it, and who was in the room.
