"Transgender in the Bio World": Jeffrey Epstein's Documented Engagement with Transgender Biology, Surgery, and Media — 13 Primary Documents, 2015–2019
Nobody went looking for this.
When researchers began cross-referencing Jeffrey Epstein's email archives against the DOJ's Epstein Files, "transgender medicine" was not a search term anyone expected to return meaningful results. And yet it returned 13 of them — spanning four years, three distinct threads, and some of the most recognizable names in Epstein's inner circle.
What those documents show is not what you might expect. They do not show Epstein as a patient, an activist, or a donor. They show something more characteristic of the man: a Harvard-trained evolutionary biologist directed to produce research on command; the founding director of America's first comprehensive transgender surgery program soliciting Epstein for documentary funding; and a Wall Street memo, written one week after the Harvey Weinstein story broke, treating transgender as an emerging financial sector category — listed with a smiley face.
This is the documentary record.
Using AI cross-referencing against the DOJ's Epstein Files, we identified 13 documents connecting Jeffrey Epstein to the world of transgender medicine, biology, and documentary filmmaking. The documents span 2015 to 2019 and involve three separate threads: a research compliance dispute with evolutionary biologist Robert Trivers; a multi-year relationship with Dr. Jess Ting, founding surgical director of Mount Sinai's Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery; and a pattern of positioning transgender as a financial and scientific tracking topic across Epstein's inner network.
This is what the documents actually show.
Part 1: The Trivers Commission — Funding Conditioned on Research Compliance
EFTA00835004 — February 6, 2016
Robert Trivers is a Harvard-trained evolutionary biologist, recipient of multiple major scientific awards, and a longtime Epstein grantee. In February 2016, Epstein sent him a directive:
"i suggest you write a piece on transgender in the bio world"
This is not a suggestion from a colleague. Trivers had been receiving Epstein funding for years. The framing is a research assignment from a patron to a funded scientist.
Three years later, the funding relationship had clearly deteriorated. Trivers wrote a desperate appeal.
EFTA01035762 — March 15–16, 2019
This email chain is the most direct document in the set. Trivers writes a lengthy, pleading message asking Epstein to restore his funding. Epstein's reply conditions restoration explicitly:
"I thought that you might want to focus on transgender biology. people would be interestsesd and i would fund... giving you money for subjects that would be in my strong view detrimental to your future. creates a problem."
Trivers capitulated the same day.
This exchange took place in March 2019. Epstein was arrested on federal sex trafficking charges in July 2019 — four months later.
EFTA00642886 — Undated
A separate document, a lecture abstract Trivers sent to Epstein, frames transgender people using evolutionary biology terminology:
"Transsexuals are a brand new set of morphs — made possible by biotechnology."
The date on this document is unclear, but it appears in the corpus alongside the Trivers correspondence.
Part 2: Dr. Jess Ting — Founding Director of America's First Comprehensive Transgender Surgery Program
Dr. Jess Ting had known Epstein since at least 2010, when he performed cosmetic procedures for women in Epstein's circle. He visited Epstein's private island in 2013 and, in 2015, offered to let Epstein vet his press responses.
In May 2016, Ting's professional life changed significantly: he was appointed founding surgical director of the newly established Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery (CTMS), the first comprehensive transgender surgery program in the United States. He immediately contacted Epstein.
EFTA01743575 — May 14, 2016
Ting announced his CTMS appointment and solicited Epstein for documentary funding:
"I have recently agreed to become the founding director of the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital... I am hoping that I can come to speak to you about the possibility of supporting a documentary film that will record this journey."
EFTA00827028 — May 21, 2016
Epstein did not fund the documentary. He forwarded Ting's email to Dr. Eva Andersson-Dubin (his former girlfriend, a physician and philanthropist) with a note:
"Do you have any interest in supporting this...?"
Dubin declined.
EFTA02646620 — July 1, 2017
Ting continued corresponding with Epstein. By mid-2017, his professional transition was complete:
"I have since given up plastic surgery entirely and jumped into transgender surgery full time."
He shared a Vimeo rough cut of what would eventually become the documentary Born to Be (released 2020).
EFTA02667053 — April 24 – May 10, 2018
Ting emailed again, announcing his specialty switch and linking to Transformation-film.com. Epstein did not reply to Ting. Instead, he forwarded the email to Stephen Hanson, an inner-circle associate and restaurateur, with the subject line: "Fwd: Film project."
There is no evidence in the corpus that Epstein funded CTMS, the Transformation project, or Born to Be. Ting's solicitations appear to have gone unfunded through Epstein. The Mount Sinai CTMS was formally established in 2016 and received its funding through the hospital system and philanthropic channels that do not include Epstein in any public record.
Part 3: The Hanson Thread — Transgender as a Network Positioning Topic
Beyond Trivers and Ting, a third thread shows Epstein treating transgender as a subject to track and position across his inner network.
EFTA02669232 — November 27, 2016
Epstein sent a list of term paper topics to "Shanson900" (identified through context as Stephen Hanson). Transgender appeared first on the list, ahead of genetic engineering, self-driving cars, and other subjects:
"Topics for term papers or discussion: 1) trangender 2) crispr..."
EFTA01038315 — August 10, 2017
Epstein wrote to Joi Ito, then director of the MIT Media Lab, coaching him on how to pitch Bill Gates. The word "transgender" appears as a topic to avoid in favor of a coined term:
"forget transgender it's transcience"
The phrasing assumes transgender had been under active consideration for the Gates pitch.
EFTA02582780 — October 15, 2017
One week after the Harvey Weinstein story broke in the New York Times, Epstein sent what reads as a financial sector briefing memo to Kathy Ruemmler (then a Goldman Sachs partner and former Obama White House Counsel). Item 4 in the memo reads:
"transgender not yet on wall street. :)"
The memo treats transgender as an emerging finance-sector category, listed alongside #MeToo and other cultural inflection points.
Part 4: The Contextual Documents
Two additional documents provide background context without direct evidence of Epstein action.
EFTA01206990 — May 5, 2015
An Academia.edu weekly digest forwarded to Epstein's inbox, containing links to academic papers including one on transgender topics. This is a passive document: it shows that Epstein received academic digests and that transgender research was circulating in those channels.
EFTA00856753 — May 17, 2015
A briefing document on Russia's LGBT laws, forwarded in Epstein's inbox. Again, contextual — it shows the topic passing through his correspondence but involves no documented Epstein response or action.
EFTA02475058 — January 13, 2016
An email to Epstein's inbox containing an explicit clinical description of vaginoplasty surgical technique. The sender's name is redacted in the corpus extract. This document predates Ting's May 2016 CTMS announcement by four months and predates Epstein's directive to Trivers by three weeks. Its origin and purpose are unclear. The sender may be a medical contact, a researcher, or someone from Epstein's existing network of physicians.
What This Doesn't Prove
This section exists because the evidentiary record warrants it.
What is not established by these documents:
- Epstein did not fund the Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery. No document in the corpus or in public records shows Epstein as a donor to CTMS. The center was established through Mount Sinai's institutional infrastructure.
- Epstein did not fund Born to Be or the Transformation documentary project. Ting solicited him; Epstein forwarded the request to Eva Dubin; Dubin declined. There is no follow-on funding document in the corpus.
- There is no evidence that Dr. Jess Ting was involved in or aware of Epstein's criminal conduct. Ting was a surgeon with a prior professional relationship with Epstein. The documents show a funding solicitation that did not succeed.
- Epstein's interest in "transgender biology" as a research topic does not establish what his underlying motivations were. The documents show directive behavior and financial leverage over Trivers; they do not explain the purpose.
What is established:
- Epstein directed a funded scientist to produce work on transgender biology and, three years later, made restoration of funding contingent on compliance with that directive.
- Epstein maintained a multi-year correspondence with the founding director of America's first comprehensive transgender surgery program.
- Epstein treated transgender as a financial sector tracking topic in late 2017, during a period of significant cultural shift on the subject.
- These 13 documents represent the full set of EFTA corpus results for this topic cluster. They are presented without omission.
